026: Lessons From Our Parenting Mistakes | Fri-Date

Today’s Topic: How we messed up & succeeded in parenting… all at the same time!

Parenting is so worthwhile, but this shit ain’t easy. These little humans don’t come with a manual, and you WILL mess up.

For today’s Fri-Date, Kim and I chat about the most important key to parenting, the importance of the first 5-7 years, and how to avoid letting your past insecurities leak into your parenting. Full disclosure: we are not specialists, we’re just parents. But we’ve learned a lot over the past 15 years, and we’d like to share it with you.

What’s the most important thing we learned?

You’re going to clash with your significant other, at some point, about how to raise your kids. Kim and I came from wildly different backgrounds, and as a result, we do things in wildly different ways.

But you can’t let that division manifest in your parenting – you have to present a united front. You have to teach your child that, when a decision is made by either parent, that is THE decision.

One tool we have is a safe word – Silver Squirrell – for any time a situation might come up when our child tries to ask both of us the same thing, looking for different results. So if the kid comes in and asks one of us for ice cream for breakfast, we’ll pull the other aside or a send a text with the safe word, even if we don’t have time to fully explain.

Hi, I’m Rob!

Hi, I’m Rob! It has been said “You are not what you have learned, but what you’ve overcome.”

I have overcome my share of obstacles in order to architect the life of my dreams and uncover the key to lasting, meaningful success. Growing up in Queens (literally on the wrong side of the tracks), my early years were tumultuous, marked by hardship and violence.
