Today’s Topic: Stopping goal rollover

Resources:

Today Kim and I are talking about goal rollover. We’re on the eve of a new year and a new decade so goal-setting is in full swing. But who’s rolling over goals that they haven’t accomplished yet? Maybe ones that you set in 2017 or 2018.

We’re not talking about goals where you fell a little short on the outcome, we’re talking about goals where you didn’t make any progress whatsoever.

This is how we set goals and make sure that we achieve them.

1. Be passionate about your goal

If you forget what your goal is, that’s a sign you’re not excited about it. Goals should not just look good on paper, they should be outcomes that would make a real difference in your life. For example, getting rid of debt is great but you won’t get excited about it unless you think about what it means, for example being able to work less and spend more time with your family.

2. You have to figure out the steps to accomplish your goal

It might take a while to set up the system and the infrastructure to achieve your goal so give yourself the grace and time to do that. One of my goals is to learn to surf but there’s a whole bunch of things I have to do first, like learn to swim better and buy a bathing suit that’s not going to fall off me in the waves.

3. String habits together

I’ve got a morning routine that leads from one thing into the next thing. So the night before I have my yoga mat and my clothes laid out for me, I’ve got my coffee set up for me. My alarm is set for 6am. So I go from the alarm into the routine. And once that gets hardwired in, it’s impossible to not do it. It’s like you’re not even using any bandwidth in your brain because it already knows what to do.

4. Celebrate milestones on the way

Happiness is not waiting at the end of the rainbow when you’ve accomplished a goal. You have to find it along the way or your achievement won’t last. (Ever lost weight then gained it back in the following months?)

What are your goals for the next year? We hope this helps you reimagine and rethink them so you don’t end up rolling them over into 2021.

Hi, I’m Rob!

Hi, I’m Rob! It has been said “You are not what you have learned, but what you’ve overcome.”

I have overcome my share of obstacles in order to architect the life of my dreams and uncover the key to lasting, meaningful success. Growing up in Queens (literally on the wrong side of the tracks), my early years were tumultuous, marked by hardship and violence.
